Wurr wins race and Class A. Kurrein wins Championship.

Thruxton - 13 October 1996

The forecast was for heavy rain and high winds but the gods were looking down and the sun shining on the last round of the Morgan Motor Company Challenge at Thruxton on Sunday 13th October. The restrictions on testing at Thruxton meant that the morning practice was for most drivers their first time around the circuit since the race last year and with that in mind the session was remarkably uneventful! Peter Garland set fastest lap with Matthew Wurr alongside on the front row of the grid. And so with Matthew needing to win and set fastest lap and Peter needing either a win or second place and fastest lap, the stage was set for the Class A Championship showdown. Martin Kurrein had safely come through practice and barring mishaps should end the day as overall Champion

Nineteen cars were on the grid for the start of the ten lap race and once again it was Peter Garland who led Matthew into the first corner and crossed the line in the lead at the end of the first lap. Craig Jones was in third followed by Grahame Walker, Malcolm Paul and Mike Fellows. Mark Baldwin was 7th with Rob Wells, Martin Kurrein and Rick Bourne occupying the next three places. David Rushton, Tony Howard and Jack Bellinger were in the middle of the field and Chris Acklam, John Clarke, James Paterson, Peter Sargeant, Mary Lindsay and Simon Orebi Gann completed it.

As the leaders approached the chicane for the second time they were side by side but somehow Matthew got through to cross the line first. Craig came past followed by the two Class B cars of Grahame and Malcolm almost side by side. Mike Fellows was just in front of the next battle between Mark and Rob and then came Martin The next four cars had nothing between them with David just ahead of Tony, Chris A and James. Sadly, Rick was missing after a coming together with David at Campbells but the remainder were safely through at the end of two laps. With six battles taking place throughout the field the pace was fast and furious and the antics of Peter, Matthew and James had the crowd at the chicane gasping!

At the end of lap three Chris A was at the head of his battle but by the following lap he was third of the four cars and James had slid his way in front. Lap four saw a change for the lead of Class B as Malcolm had squeezed past Grahame. Simon was now in the centre of the Peter S/ Mary battle and the three were about to be lapped by the leading duo. At the end of the sixth lap the leading pair were poised to lap the Class E cars of Jack and John. Matthew took the conventional course and passed both on the inside while Peter passed John on the inside, crossed between the two, took Jack on the outside and found himself on Matthew’s exhaust by the time they reached Allard.

On lap seven, a potentially even more hazardous situation was the prospect of the four car dice being lapped while fighting for their own positions, however David was missing (with a seized engine) and, as the leaders swept past, Chris took advantage to once more lead what was now a trio. As the back of the field passed the line for the ninth time, Peter Sargeant replaced Simon in fifteenth place and James Paterson was now first of the trio and placed tenth.

When the chequered flag came out at the end of a terrific race, Matthew had clung on to take victory by a whisker from Peter. Craig was a comfortable third and Malcolm Paul had snatched Class B honours less than a second ahead of Grahame Walker. Mike Fellows finished sixth just ahead of Mark who had won his tussle with Rob by just fractions of a second.

While everyone else was doing battle around him, one person was circulating in solitary splendour secure in the knowledge that he had only to finish and win his class to become 1996 overall champion. After a season of ups and downs for Martin it was perhaps right that the last race should go so smoothly and give him his much deserved title and Class D championship.

The Class A title went to Matthew Wurr who, by setting fastest lap .06 of a second quicker than Peter, gained the deciding point. Malcolm came second overall, but has the consolation of ending the season as champion of Class B. Stephen Lockett finished as Class C champion and, after a season-long battle with Jack, John Clarke ends the season Class E winner.
